Materials Equipment
AstorLite OK6228/1 (now IGI 4750A) Candle Wax Double Boiler
Molds for Pillar Candles Thermometer for Candle Making
Fragrance Oil/Scent Pouring Pot
Liquid Dye Scale
Wick or Wicks Oven
Weigh Wax:
Melt Wax:
  • Heat the candle wax to between 140°F-160°F using a double-boiler system.
  • Use a candle thermometer to check temperature.
Prepare Molds:
  • While wax is melting set up molds by inserting appropriate size wick pins into clean molds.
Add Scent:
  • Add up to 6% fragrance by melted wax weight not to exceed 1 ounce of scent to 1 pound of wax.
Add Dye:
  • Add dye until desired color is achieved.
  • You can test color by dropping a few drops of wax onto a piece of white paper.
Stir well:
  • Stir thoroughly to incorporate scent and dye.
Pour Wax:
  • Pour Wax into clean molds.
  • Don't forget you will need to save some wax for the 2nd pour and caking.
Cooling:
  • Allow to cool as slowly as possible.
  • Do not place in a water bath or refrigerator to accelerate the cooling process.
Second Pour:
  • Once the first pour has completely cooled, remove the candles with wick pins from the molds to make sure it releases.
  • Return candles with wick pins to the mold and top off the candles as needed.
  • After the 2nd pour has completely cooled candles are ready to be wicked and caked.
Insert Wick:
  • Remove candles from your mold and remove wick pins.
  • Consult our Molds page for recommended wick size for each of our molds.
  • Insert appropriate wick for your candles.
Caking the Candle:
  • Reheat remaining wax so you can cake the candle.
  • Once the wax has melted, let it set up for a few minutes.
  • Using a metal whisk, whip the wax. Your wax will change from liquid to an icing type consistency.
  • Once the texture is thick enough, use a paint brush to apply the wax to the sides and the top of the candle.
  • Work quickly, if wax becomes too stiff, place it back in wet bath to melt down and whip again until you have finished caking the candle.
Trim Wick:
  • Trim wick as needed.

Never melt wax on a gas stove, it has a Flash Point & is Flammable.
Never leave wax unattended.
